The
Background Story:
I'm known as the portal guy. I set up local community portals for people who want to go offline and show local businesses how they can get more business and sell their products/services locally by using the power of the internet.
I remember one day I answered the phone and a male voice said, "Hi, I'm John Spangler. I need to get one of your portals as soon as possible." I instantly became curious and asked him why the rush? He said, "Because I've sold three premium portal listings to local businesses here in town for $579.00 each and I don't have your portal to set them up!"
The Walls Were Closing In
He told me he had lost his job, money was getting tight and he had been looking at the best way to generate some fast cash. He looked at affiliate and CPA programs but he couldn't wait 30-45 days or longer to get paid. He couldn't do eBay because he didn't have time to wait for the listing to end and if the buyer didn't pay.. he would be in an even bigger mess. He thought about fast food joints but they don't pay big money and he would have to wait to get a check.
He even concidered getting a 9 to 5 job but more time would be involved with interviews and he would have to wait a couple of weeks or more to get paid.. especially if they held on to his first paycheck.
None of the options above were the answer he was looking for. He was up against the wall and needed cash right NOW..
Surfing The Forums Gave Him The Answer
He was reading messages on a forum desperately looking for ideas when he found out about me and my portals.. then the light went on. "Hey.. if I play my cards right, I could use his portal to set up some premium listings for businesses here in town and have instant cash tomorrow." The only problem was, he didn't have a portal. Well, he didn't let that small problem stop him.
He also didn't have anyone to watch his kids so he had to sign them up for daycare at $390/week. The deadline was set. He had one week before he would have to pay the bill. Now he could devote all his time to the task at hand.
He Was On A Mission
So
without a portal, without any money, without really any idea of what he
was doing he
started setting up appointments with local businesses with an idea he
had on how he may
help their business. He started with businesses who were already advertising
in the local coupon books because in his area, the ads in those magazines
cost around $500/month and they went out to roughly 40 thousand people.
He let the businesses know that his portal was in development and he showed them my portal so they would know what a premium listing looked like and how it could help them.
What he found out was when you honestly give to the local businesses, during the time he spoke to them, he gave them so much FREE information that he knew they had to be thinking jeez if he's giving me this much free information I wonder what I'll get if I go with this guy.
He averaged about 2 hours per client to really understand their business and how best his solution would help them. And he found out he had an ace in the hole and that was.. he was LOCAL, the businesses loved the fact that he wasn't just a salesperson. They were talking to the owner of the portal and he gave them his cell phone number and insisted that if they had any issues to call his PERSONAL cell and he would handle the problem personally
So
within the first week he had made $1,737.00 or 3 clients at $579.00
each so he had enough to buy my portal, pay the daycare bill and have
a little left over for next week.

For
Businesses.. Its Rough Out There
Even
though the news is stating all the gloom and doom that is going on around
us, John was able to still make a decent income by helping businesses
get online. He and I really believe that this is the perfect business
to be in right now because businesses still need to get their message
out and ads on TV run into a bunch of money as do radio, the newspaper
and yellow pages. This
recession is our BEST friend right now because businesses are looking
for alternative ways of getting their information to the general population
and we are their knight in shining armor - these businesses are thanking
him for helping them.
A
Local Community Portal That Does Everything
Most local businesses, even if they do have a website - don't know how to promote it and get traffic. Some may spend money for radio spots, classified ads, and other things, but how many know about article writing for instance? Many local businesses don't even HAVE a website. Reasons range from lack of knowledge, software, time - etc.
When I started working on Portal Domination, I designed it on paper first so I could work out the features I wanted to offer to the community. I wanted news, information and weather that updated automatically, classifieds, a social network, Google analitics, premium business listings that could be sold, and simple generic ones that could be offered for free. I wanted a place for local school and city numbers, I wanted places for some well placed adsense and affiliate(cpa) offers. I also wanted.. multimedia; audios / videos / slideshows.
Then..

Here
are some of the things the portal can do:
Biz Site Generator
The portal allows you to offer a two page business site (click here to see page 1 - opens in a new window / click here to see page 2 - opens in a new window) with information about a business's products/services. A business is given a username and password and they can make changes to their pages anytime they like and the changes occur as soon as they click on the save button.
Changes are typed into a form box so they do not have to know html to have a nice site. If they want, they can enter html into the boxes to make things look even nicer with colored fonts etc. Click here to see a demo of the editor - opens in a new window.
The owner/administrator of the portal can add features to a biz site like a restaurant menu, video, audio, opt-in form, article and e-commerce by just pasting in plugin codes into the appropriate box.
The biz site then takes into account the plugins being used and displays the contents of the page correctly so things don't look out of place.
You can charge accordingly for the plugins you use. For example: A minute and a half to two minute virtual tour video of the business is something that isn't being done by "local portal sites" and businesses would love this type of exposure. Two video plugins are available, hosted and youtube.
Biz site owners are given a login code so they can monitor traffic to their biz site if they wish. The portal also sends them a traffic report periodically via email.
Pictures can be uploaded by the business owner or one of the administrators. The system uses images that are formatted to 450 pixels wide and can be any length (within reason). You do not need image editing software such as Photoshop. I provide an easy to use program that formats the images for you. All you do is drag the image over to the program and release your mouse and the program does the rest. Within seconds, your picture is ready to go.
Now.. how powerful is all of this?
Well lets say I'm a business owner that just found out he has several cases of furbys that was covered up in a back room. I grab my digital camera, take a picture of one of the cute guys, process my picture for uploading, go to the specials page, upload the picture and announce a lost furby blowout. I then click on the save button and it goes live immediately.
Did this take all day to accomplish? No.. it took about 5 minutes.
What Else Can The Portal Do?
Local event calendar
Multiple login accounts can be given out so you can have students entering information about their local schools, the local chamber of commerce announcing meetings, churches letting the community know about bake sales.. etc.
Local Weather
This is a full blown weather information service like you see on the television news that also has forecasts, weather maps (including animated) and emergency announcements.
Local Classifieds
Residents can post free ads for things they want to sell or things they are looking to buy or make announcements etc. Local businesses can post free ads and coupons. I can hear you saying, "Give them this for free?".. Believe it or not, this helps to turn them into a customer who wants a bigger presence on your portal.
Local Search Engine
This is a very powerful search engine that looks through the biz site database. For example, if I was looking for restaurants that have take out, I can type the words take out into the products or services area and if any biz sites match, they are displayed. The search engine is also used when you click on any of the businesses on the left side of the screen.
Example: If you click on accountants, any accountants that have a biz site will appear as an enhanced listing. If there are no biz sites for accountants then google adsense is displayed. Then, a basic listing of local accountants is displayed. Basic listings are used to turn these businesses into biz site owners.
Prospect Generator
This is a powerful auto-responder that can be used to generate prospects or for you to set up auto-response messages for biz site customers.
Freight Elevator
If a business decides they want an additional page on their biz site (example: a restaurant that wants to show their menu). They can be given a login to the freight elevator which allows them to upload/download/delete files associated with their additional page so they can make changes to their menu whenever they want.
Advertising System
This system can be programmed with ads for local businesses, Clickbank, Commission Junction or any of the CPA's out there. Stats can be delivered to your advertisers if needed.
Social Networking
This is like a local MySpace. Local residents can set up their own account and have audios, videos and a blog of their own and more if they choose.

Maintenance and server requirements
The portal updates news, horoscopes, movies, stock info and the weather automatically. Server requirements are a WHM account with cpanel and so far I haven't had any problems with any tweaks that may be needed from the hosting companies. You will need at least 300 megs storage space, 15 email accounts and 5 sql databases available on your account. Your Questions Answered:
How Long Does It Take To Have It Set Up?
This is a relative question, because there may be small delays due to
domain name propagation, getting the correct hosting, (I prefer a hosting
account with WHM and Cpanel is definately required) - I may
need to wait on server support, or server config changes, that kind of
thing. Also - if it takes you three days to get to a telephone or your
email - that could cause a delay!
Other than that, if all goes well - we're talking 3-5 days, hopefully
no longer than one week.
Can
I Add Things?
Yes depending on what you want to add, there may be an associated fee,
depending on what it is, but you are welcome to add things on your own
once the site is set up-remember, it's yours.
Can I Install It Myself?
No - the installation is very complex, and does not use a typical install
script. All the programs have to be installed in such a manner that everything
goes in the proper order and works well together. It's much easier and
less time consuming if I do that for you. Plus you won't have the pleasure
of spitting nails while pulling your hair out in frustration.
Can
I Move The Portal To Another Domain?
No, the portal is licensed to one domain only.
I will set up the portal and get everything
running smoothly except for some needed local data entry and editing of
a few html files. You own the domain, the hosting and the portal.
You don't have to make monthly payments or share advertising revenue.
The portal is yours and all profits that you make, you keep. You can have
it up and running then flip it for a profit or build it up into an asset
