The
Background Story:
I
have been involved in the "offline" market for about 2 years
now. Although, when I started it really was just me selling information
and services to friends that owned small businesses. I have owned a small
business in my town since 1999, and got to know quite a few owners. Only
about 8 months ago did I take it seriously and actually make it my business.
Most local businesses, even if they do have a website - don't know how
to promote it and get traffic. Some may spend money for radio spots, classified
ads, and other things, but how many know about article writing for instance?
Many local businesses don't even HAVE a website. Reasons range from lack
of knowledge, software, time - etc.
About
6 months ago I started LocalBizBuilders.com, a forum dedicated
to the "offline" community of marketers. This is where I met
Richard Hunter. But let me back up a bit...
I
have a slightly different approach to the "offline" marketplace
than most, going with a 2-pronged attack when approaching clients. I have
a web design/seo/marketing business that I pitch, but I also wanted to
ALSO have a local directory/portal to promote at the same time.
This way, no matter what, I have something of value that a potential client
could want.
So
this leads me to my quest. My quest to find the perfect portal. I looked
everywhere for just the right one. I wanted a portal that did everything
you could imagine.
I
wanted classifieds, a social network, business listings that I can sell
(premium), and generic ones (free). I wanted a place for local school
and city numbers, I wanted places for some well placed adsense and affiliate(cpa)
offers.
MOST
important...I wanted to own the darn thing outright! Most of the applications
I saw were pretty high priced, AND they would never be mine. Monthly
fees and commissions were always in the fine print, turning me off. If
I am going to do the hard work, the site should be mine...hosted on my
server!
Now
I found some pretty cool Joomla and even Wordpress templates, but they
were highly underpowered for what I wanted. THEN I took a look
at Richard's portal.
Now
at first I was very impressed with it's power and potential! Heck, I would
even own the thing outright AND it would be hosted on my servers!!
Why didn't I buy right away?
Pride.
I still thought in some twisted way I could do the same thing with a Joomla
or Wordpress application. So I spent a month or so researching for the
right applications to add up to one great portal.
After
a month...I gave up. I COULD do it, but it would probably take
me forever to put together, and even then I couldn't find a way to integrate
all of the modules I wanted seamlessly.
So
with my tail tucked, I approached Richard. He gave me full access to the
back-end of his portal and pretty much let me take it for a test drive.
Now it looked awesome before this, and after tinkering for a few days
with it...I just fell in love with it. So much so that I have partnered
with him to help market it to everyone.
WARNING:
This site is not
for everyone! It requires some work on your part! You still need to go
out and sell it. Just by putting this site up, you will not get rich overnight.
This should be obvious, but I figured I would state it anyway.
This site does not run on a cms like joomla. The main portal that handles
the main menu, local business pages, site display, site publishing, member
and administrator accounts and local search engine uses CGI and basic
html with ccs templates.
Programs and scripts have been added to enhance the stickiness and usability
of the portal for local residents and businesses. There is no way I can
cover everything this local portal does without this post becoming rather
large so here are the high-lights:
You keep 100% of the profits
and don't have to share them with anyone.
[1] - Each local business listing
can have its own banner. You can sell this space to a related business.
In this case the pool page has a banner for a pool company.
[2] - A Premium listing with a two
page biz site. Biz site listings automatically appear at the top of
the business listings.
[3] - You can move a business to
the top of the basic listings for a yearly fee (the basic listings come
up below the premium listings).
[4] - You can put square or skyscraper
ads in this section. They can be related to the business listing or
affiliate ads.

- Rotating banner ads can be inserted in this section on the main page.

featured business section on the main page. A different listing appears
on each visit or browser refresh.

The biz sites that the portal generates allow you to add plugins which
allow you to offer ala carte pricing for features you can add like..
[10] - Video infomercial plugin
- If you don't know how to create and put video on the web, portal owners
will have access to information and software (included with purchase)
so you can be making your own videos for local businesses.
[11] - Audio commercial plugin
- Portal owners also get audio software (included with purchase) that
can take any graphic and turn it into an audio button. An audio capture/editor
is included as well.
[12] - Email opt-in form plugin
- used in addition with Aweber to gather leads, contact information
and to send out special offers.
[13] - Slideshow plugin - This allows
a business to quickly show off their most popular products/services
and yes, the software that makes these slideshows is also included.
[14] - Article plugin - we all know
about content. This plugin allows you to add an article to their biz
site.
[15]
- Add an additional page(s) plugin - this allows you to offer additional
pages to biz sites. For example.. a restaurant could have their menu
displayed or a travel agency could show off their latest cruises. Note:
The additional pages cannot be edited online like you can with the biz
site generator, they are edited offline with an html editor (included).

- The portal can be monitized in many other ways. Amazon and eBay ads
for example. Articles (interview style) about local businesses (the
business owners pay to have their interview on the portal) etc. etc.
How hard is the portal to use?
Well, how would you like to be able to build a two page web site for
local businesses and the only tool you need is..

Text Into Boxes And Uploading Photos!
Just so you don't get confused, the two
page sites that the portal generates are called.. a "Biz Site".
The portal doesn't limit you to just text. If you want, you can enter
html into the boxes to make things look even nicer with colored fonts
etc. And there's more.. the owner/administrator of the portal can add
features to a biz site like a restaurant menu, video, audio, slideshow,
opt-in form, article and e-commerce by just pasting in plugin codes
into the appropriate boxes.
The portal then takes into account the plugins being used and displays
the contents of the page correctly so things don't look out of place.
You can charge accordingly for the plugins you use. For example: A minute
and a half to two minute virtual tour video of the business is something
that isn't being done by "local portal sites" and businesses
would love this type of exposure. (We're going to give you software
to make your own videos and show you how to use it with how-to videos
so you can make the coolest videos in your town). Two video plugins
are available, hosted and youtube.
The site owners are given a login code so they can make their own
changes any time they wish and monitor traffic that comes to their
biz site. The portal also sends them a traffic report periodically via
email.
Pictures for the biz site can be uploaded by the business owner or one
of the administrators. The portal uses images that are formatted to
450 pixels wide and can be any length (within reason). You do not need
to have image editing software such as Photoshop. I provide you with
an easy to use program that formats the photos for you. All you do is
drag a photo (usually made with a digital camera) over to the program
and release your mouse and the program does the rest. Within seconds,
your new photo is ready to go.
Richard includes a full array of video tutorials on how to use this
site, as well as some free programs like a very simple photo resizer
(literally just dragging a picture over to a file will resize it for
you!!), and a program that pulls local phone numbers and addresses for
you to add to your portal.
What
else can the portal do?
Local event calendar
Multiple login accounts can be given out so you can have students entering
information about their local schools, the local chamber of commerce announcing
meetings, churches letting the community know about bake sales.. etc.
Local Weather
This is a full blown weather information service like you see on the television
news that also has forecasts, weather maps (including animated) and emergency
announcements.
Local Classifieds
Residents can post free ads for things they want to sell or things they
are looking to buy or make announcements etc. Local businesses can post
free ads and coupons. I can hear you saying, "Give them this for
free?".. Believe it or not, this helps to turn them into a customer
who wants a bigger presence on your portal.
Local Search Engine
This is a very powerful search engine that looks through the biz site
database. For example, if I was looking for restaurants that have take
out, I can type the words take out into the products or services area
and if any biz sites match, they are displayed. The search engine is also
used when you click on any of the businesses on the left side of the screen.
Example: If you click on accountants, any
accountants that have a biz site will appear on the top of the page as
an enhanced listing. If there are no biz sites for accountants then google
adsense is displayed. Then, a basic listing of local accountants is displayed.
Basic listings are used to turn these businesses into paying biz
site owners.
Prospect Generator
This is a powerful auto-responder that can be used to generate prospects
or for you to set up auto-response messages for biz site customers.
Freight Elevator
If a business decides they want an additional page on their biz site (example:
a restaurant that wants to show their menu). They can be given a login
to the freight elevator which allows them to upload/download/delete files
associated with their additional page so they can make changes to their
menu whenever they want.
Advertising System
This system can be programmed with ads for local businesses, Clickbank,
Commission Junction or any of the CPA's out there. Stats can be delivered
to your advertisers if needed.
Social Networking
This is like a local MySpace. Local residents can set up their own account
and have audios, videos and a blog of their own and more if they choose.
Automatic SEO
Over the years Richard has done many many
different types of testing and based on the results, making tweaks to
see what was and what wasn't effective. Because of this.. The portal is
now able to achieve high rankings for most local search phrases on its
own without backlinks. Imagine what happens when you begin to aquire backlinks!
(In the portal members forum, you'll see how to quickly set up
backlinks yourself and wipe out any competion).
You could easily dominate local search in your community with portal domination.
I don't think I need to tell you what you can do with the local businesses

How Long Will This Take?
This is a relative question, because there may be small delays due to
domain name propagation, getting the correct hosting, (Richard will need

days to get to a telephone or your email - that could cause a delay!
Slow payments or NO payments could cause a delay! Other than that, if

Can I Add Things?

is Richard, and I'll be creating a whole little "network" of
